Commercial Appeal: Cleaning with meaning: Companies provide services free of charge to women battling cancer

"Kelly Uhlhorn didn't realize when she sat down at her computer one afternoon that her Web surfing session would have a major impact on her business, her life and the lives of others.

'Every once in a while, I go online and look at other cleaning companies,' said Uhlhorn, co-owner of Memphis-based cleaning service 2 Chicks and a Broom. 'I look at their sites and blogs and look up new tips on green cleaning to see what's out there and get new information.'

On this particular afternoon, she came across a link to Cleaning for a Reason, a nonprofit group that partners with cleaning companies across the country to offer free cleaning services to women who are undergoing cancer treatment."

Commercial Appeal: Because I Said So: Fall back, but spring forward into clean room

"With the time change, we've fallen back into a new routine here at home, one with dark afternoons and well-lit mornings. Last weekend, I roused my little farmers early to harvest the wheat, thresh the grain and tend to the pullets in the brooder.

Just kidding, these kids don't know a horse from a radish and are as confused as any other city kid about the sudden difference in night and day. As confused as I am; I had to Google farming terms to come up with 'pullets' and 'brooder.'

What we did do that day was to convince them in their newly sunlit morning that it was springtime. They were so disoriented when I started going from clock to clock, falling back -- actually moving time backward to their amazement -- that I was able to convince them that it's a whole different season.

And with this new spring season comes -- what else? -- spring cleaning."

Commercial Appeal: Housework service, 2 Chicks and a Broom, cleaning up nests

"When Kip and Kelly Uhlhorn go shopping for vinegar, lemon, ginger, basil, lavender and green tea, they're not planning on cooking dinner.

The new owners of 2 Chicks and a Broom plan on continuing the company's legacy of providing cleaning services with all-natural products while expanding retail sales.

The Uhlhorns, who have been married for 31/2 years and residents of Memphis for the last two, bought the Midtown-based company from the original owner, Candace Mills, for $50,000 in September.

Kelly Uhlhorn, 34, had been a close friend of Mills' and worked as a 'chick' herself. Mills moved to New York after the sale." Check out the full article.

"Mr. Clean, make way for Dr. Bronner.

2 Chicks and a Broom have begun selling the all-natural cleaning products its
'chicks' use to the general public.

The Cooper-Young cleaning company acquired the other half of its 885 S. Cooper location when Light Years Vintage, a vintage clothes shop, closed it doors last year.

One half of the new space is now a conference room; the other is the retail shop.

'It’s tough because we’re in a house and no one realizes we have (a retail shop) inside,' says co-owner Kelly Uhlhorn." Read the full article.
